There seems to have been an issue as to whether he was really entitled to have two "livings" - Huffington and Tallington, which his biographies confirms that he did. Listing does not say how the matter was decided. The Will with a codicil of the Rev Brownlow Villiers Layard formally of Uffington in the County of Lincoln afterwards of Boulogne-sur-Mer in France but late of Wembley in the County of Middlesex Clerk Rector of Uffington as aforesaid deceased who died 26 March 1861 at Wembley aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Sarah Jane Layard of Wembley aforesaid Widow the Relict and the Rev John Thomas Layard of Swafield in the County of Norfolk Clerk and the Rev Charles Clement Layard of Wembley aforesaid Clerk the Sons the Executors. Will Brownlow Villiers Layard Proved 15 June 1861 THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me The Reverend Brownlow Villiers Layard Doctor of Uffington in the county of Lincoln, but for several years last past resident at Boulonge-sur-Mer. And first I direct my executors to pay and discharge all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses including the debt due to my sister Elizabeth, and any sums which may have been advanced to or for me by any of my sons since I left Uffington aforesaid, and so far as can or may be such payment to be made with and out of my general personal estate and effects in exoneration and discharge of the shares, policies, and monies hereinafter specifically bequeathed. And I empower my executors at their discretion to pay any debts or claims against my estate either with or without legal evidence of their existence and although any of such debts or claims may have become barred or extinguished by virtue of the statute of limitations or by virtue of any release or composition, but I declare that this provision in my Will shall not be construed to revive the said debts or claims or give any legal or equitable remedy to the claimants except only so far as my executors may think proper to pay the same. I give and bequeath my shares and interest in the Wilts and Berkshire Canal to my grandson Brownlow Villiers Layard. And I give and bequeath the several policies on my life in the Equitable Life Assurance Office being numbered 26, 385 for £1,200 and numbered 27, 483 for £500 and all sums, bonuses, accumulations, and proceeds receivable in respect thereof in the shares and proportions following, that is to say, the sum of £142 part thereof to my son Brownlow Villiers Layard, the like sum to my son Bernard Granville Layard, the like sum to my son Frederic Louis Layard, the like sum to my son Charles Clement Layard, the like sum to my son Charles Albemarle Layard if living at the time of my decease, the like sum to my daughter-in-law Eliza Matilda Layard if living at my decease and in case she shall not survive me then to her children by my late son John Beville Layard in equal shares, and in case there shall be any surplus after paying such several sums of £142 each or such of them as shall become payable as aforesaid. I bequeath such surplus in equal shares to my four sons Brownlow Villiers Layard, Bernard Granville Layard, Frederic Louis Layard, and Charles Clement Layard, and my daughters-in-law Eliza Matilda Layard if living and Harriette Cobb Layard if living or her children as aforesaid in case of her decease in my lifetime such children taking among them the share only of their deceased mother. And as to all the REST, RESIDUE, AND REMAINDER of my personal estate and effects whatsoever subject to and after payment of my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses in manner aforesaid I give and bequeath the same to my dear wife Sarah Jane Layard. And I appoint my said dear wife and my sons Brownlow Villiers Layard and John Thomas Layard EXECUTRIX and EXECUTORS of my Will. And lastly I revoke all former Wills and declare this my last Will.

THIS IS A CODICIL to my foregoing Will. My late son Brownlow Villiers Layard having died since the date of my Will, I leave the legacy and share to which he would have been entitled under my Will in case he had survived me to my grandson Brownlow Villiers Layard and direct the same to be invested by my executors during his minority and the interest and annual proceeds to be accumulated for his benefit until he attains the age of twenty-one years and I appoint my son the Reverend Charles Clement Layard one of the Executors of my said last Will in the place of my said late son Brownlow Villiers Layard. And in all other respects I confirm my said as witness my hand this 23rd October 1854 B. V. Layard

PROVED at London with a codicil 15th June 1861, by the oaths of Sarah Jane Layard widow the relict and the Revd. John Thomas Layard clerk the son the executor named in the codicil to whom admon was granted.

Brownlow married Louisa PORT [27147] [MRIN: 9740], daughter of John PORT of Ilam STS [31579] and Mary D'EWES [31580], on 6 Oct 1803 in St Werburgh Derby DBY. (Louisa PORT [27147] was born on 7 Apr 1776, baptised on 8 May 1778 in Ilam Stafford, died on 4 Jul 1817 and was buried in Bristol Cathedral.)
Brownlow next married Sarah Jane MARGARY [27146] [MRIN: 9739], daughter of Thomas MARGARY Esq of Clapham SRY [27319] and Jane CLARKSON [24568], on 1 Feb 1821 in Middlesex. (Sarah Jane MARGARY [27146] was born on 27 Apr 1791, baptised on 7 Jun 1791 in St Stephen Walbrook LND and died on 15 Feb 1885 in Bath SOM.)
