Police Court. At this Court on Saturday William John Moffett was charged with having, on the 8th February, 1892, at Invercargill, unlawfully and knowingly, falsely applied a trade mark to certain goods, to wit, two bottles of hop bitters the device of a sprig of the hop vine in combination with the words and figures "Dr Soule, Hop Bitters, 1872," blown upon bottles of amber colour, rectangular section and panelled sides, without the assent of the proprietors of the said trade mark, contrary to the Patent Designs and Trade Marks Act. The offence was admitted. Sergeant Macdonell, Inspector under the Act, was the informant. Mr G. V. Brodrick, who appeared for the Hop Bitters Manufacturing Co, of Rochester, instructed by Messrs Seivwright and James, of Dunedin, stated that his clients did not press for a heavy penally, the object of the proceedings being to put a stop to a practice which was followed pretty extensively. It was explained that in this particular instance the defendant had used Dr Soule's Hop Bitters bottles with labels bearing his own name on them. A fine of L2 11s, with costs L2 9s was imposed. A second information, charging defendant with selling two bottles of hop bitters to which a false description was applied, was withdrawn. The R.M., C. K.Rawson, Esq. Occupied the bench. The death is announced from Invercargill of Mr William John Moffett, one of the pioneer residents in Southland. He arrived in 1861, and died, by a strange coincidence, while Southland's Jubilee was being celebrated by massed bands. The deceased was seventy-four years old Ref: Marlborough Express, Volume XLV, Issue 77, 1 April 1911, Page 5
