bullet  General Notes:

Julia (Hutchins) married Leo (ELC) Layard in 1914 after a long engagement. They met in Budleigh Salterton around 1890 but Leo kept her waiting until she was 57 (and he was 66) while he travelled the world collecting things before finally coming home to settle in to retirement and marriage late in life
They built Dark Lane House in Budleigh Salterton and were, by all accounts, happily married for seven years before he died after which she lived on there alone before dying aged 90 in 1948 and leaving the house to my father (her favourite nephew - Herbert Reginald Page Hutchins). By chance Dad (Herbert Reginald Page Hutchins) had just returned from Egypt and was posted to be CRE for SW England based in Devon in 1949 so we were able to live at Dark lane House for 3 yrs 1949-1952. The house contained many treasures including some of the pieces that had been excavated at Ninevah by Leo's uncle Austen Henry Layard. These were later sold to Melbourne University.
An oil portrait of Leo's father Edgar Leopold Layard hung in the hallway and is now residing in our attic. I attach a photo and as you will see it is slightly damaged but should be repairable if anyone in the Layard family wants it. There were also two pastel portraits a man and a woman but nothing to say who they are - they are probably Layards but could be Hutchins??

BUDLEIGH SALTERTON
There is an eucalyptus tree in full bloom (an unusual incident for this country) at "Lindenwood," Budleigh Salterton. A fashionable wedding took place at St. Peter's Church, Budleigh Salterton, on Wednesday, between Mr. Edgar Leopold Calthrop Layard, son of the late Mr. Leopold Layard, formerly of "Otterboarne," Budleigh Salterton, and Miss Julia Hutchins, of "Estella," Budleigh Salterton, second daughter of the late Mr. David Hutchins. The bride was attired in a cream coat and skirt, with hat match, and carried a bouquet, and she was given away by her brother, Col. H. L. Hutchins, whilst Miss Gwendolin Hutchin (niece of the bride) was bridesmaid. Mr. E E Hutchins (nephew of the bride) acted a "best man." Both the bride and the bridegroom are well-known in Budleigh Salterton. Mr Layard has travelled in all countries, and his lectures on his travels have created much interest locally, and also in other parts of Devonshire. There was a large attendance at the church, the principal guests being. Mrs. Bailey. Mrs. H. L. Hutchins, Mrs. A G. Hutchins. Col. A G. Hutchins. Miss Bell Hutchins, Mr, B. Martin Martineau, Miss Martineau. Miss M. Martineau, Mrs. Morris, Mr and Mrs. G. S. Northcote, Mr and Mrs Blathwayt Bean, Mrs Price, Col. Rowlandson, etc. Rev. A. D. O. Fell officiated. Mr F W. Dalgleish played the "Wedding March " and the " Bridal March." whilst the hymn "Lead us, Heavenly Father, lead us." was sung. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. C. Layard left during the day for the Italian Lakes.
