Committal of James Gardiner . . . . . For stealing a £50 bill from Mr Firmin . . . . .
Mr Thomas Henry Ambrose, solicitor, 7 Mecklenburg Sq, produced a bill for £50, which proved to be the bill stolen from Mr Firmin by the prisoner Gardiner under pretence of getting it discounted. The bill came into his possession in the following way: a man named Morton owed him some money. Morton, a few months ago, called upon him, producing 2 bills, 1 of which was the £50 bill of Mr Firmin, he told him to take his account out of these bills, and let him have an advance on the balance, as the 2 bills very much exceeded the sum owing. Witness advanced £30 to Morton on the security of the bills, 1 of which, the £50 bill, was now overdue. Witness did not know where Morton was now to be found . . . . .
